Brooklyn, New York
22,000 sf – $28M – Built 2012

Owner: Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Architect: Weiss/ Manfredi Architects
Structural Engineer: Weidlinger Associates Inc
Personal Role: Project Manager/ Engineer

Project Summary: The building received LEED Gold Certification. It includes a single-story retail pavilion and a double-height leaf-shaped exhibition/event pavilion. The retail pavilion is covered with a double pitched copper roof (Autumn Leaves). The event pavilion is under a single gable leaf-shaped 10,000 square foot living roof garden. The roof garden contains over 40,000 seasonal plant species. The two pavilions are connected by a sinuous trellis-like glass roof. One of the main challenges for the structural engineers was to keep costs below budget despite the complex geometry and construction challenges of the structure. Innovative solutions were used that respected both the architectural vision and the economic reality. The project received both state and national awards.
