Project Summary: The 2002 Cheju World Cup stadium is located on a seaward slope. It has one level below ground and five levels above ground so as not to obstruct the view of the sea view from the town center. The shape of the stadium resembles the local geological features, namely the mounds and craters created by volcanic activity. A crescent-shaped fabric roof, supported by curved roof trusses and suspended by steel cables from six giant masts, covers almost half of the premium seating. Special wind tunnel tests and non-linear structural analysis were conducted to achieve an economic design solution. This environmentally friendly designed stadium fulfills all the requirements of the FIFA. It can be converted into a multifunction complex. The project received an ACEC Honor Award; an NYACE Platinum Award for Engineering Excellence and a First Prize in the Industrial Fabrics Association International Design Award.
