Project Summary: A major renovation project transformed a group of early 20th century buildings into a high-end conference center for international organizations to discuss global justice, international relations and human rights. The original buildings included a central boarding house, an east-side garage and a west-side stable on a 400 acres estate. The existing garage was renovated and converted into a formal meeting room, and the existing stable was converted into hotel rooms. In the middle of the building, a stylish elliptical skylight double-height gathering space was created for informal conversation. A steel supported glass trellis and a reflecting pool were constructed in front of the main building. A cultivated garden was created behind the building. The new building features architecturally exposed steel, concrete and custom glass. The main challenge for the structural design was to integrate the new structure with the mostly salvaged existing structure. Oval shaped skylight is the brightest feature of the complex.
