Project Summary: The New Kensington Library is a two-story steel building located at 4207 18th Ave in Brooklyn. It is a pioneer project in sustainability and energy conservation. The building has been well designed to bring abundant natural light to the entire reading areas on the 1st and 2nd floor through the
roof skylight, the large circular floor opening beneath the skylight, glass curtain walls and large windows. A simple software-controlled louver system under the skylight reacts to the moving sun to eliminate the glare that might disturb readers. Its heating/cooling system uses geothermal energy and a heat pump network. Geothermal wells extend 500 feet below the ground. Environmentally sensitive design was undertaken to ensure interior light and air quality. The project received an Award for Excellence in Design of a Public Project by the Design Commission.
